Our History

Kawartha Montessori School (KMS), established in 1982 by Jane Erskine Stewart, began with a vision to offer Montessori education in Peterborough, Ontario. Jane’s strong ties with the Montessori Society of Canada propelled KMS from a small Casa program to an extensive elementary school for children aged 2 ½ to Grade 6, staying true to Montessori principles.

With time, KMS has emerged as the region’s top Montessori school, a reputation solidified when Jane retired in 2005 after nearly 25 years of service. Ugette Vanderpost then took over as principal (2005-2019), and under her leadership, KMS grew significantly, introducing a Middle School program and transitioning to the Woodview Campus.

Since its inception, KMS has upheld the Montessori method of student-centred learning in a meticulously designed environment. Our curriculum, teacher training, and approach heavily incorporate early childhood education and authentic Montessori principles.

In 2022, KMS celebrated 40 years, a milestone that reflects our exceptional staff and unwavering dedication to authentic Montessori education. Today, parents still choose KMS for its superior educators, commitment to Montessori education, and focus on early childhood learning.
