The Classroom & Teacher

As her research evolved, Dr. Montessori discovered that children developed best in a prepared environment that allowed them to exercise their natural curiosity. She recognized this natural curiosity as the child's desire to learn. She designed the classrooms in order to facilitate maximum independent learning and exploration by the child, while encouraging enthusiasm for learning. These environments allowed the children to pursue individual interests at their own pace and according to their abilities.

Montessori schools around the world still value these characteristics and provide Prepared Environments that include the following:

  • Beauty, order, reality, simplicity and accessibility
  • A highly trained teacher
  • A rich, extensive curriculum
  • Individual and small group lessons
  • A sense of community within the classroom
  • Purposeful work
  • Emphasis on intrinsic motivation
  • Opportunities for movement

Hands-on, self-correcting manipulative materials that engage the child in the study of numbers, mathematical operations, phonics, writing, pre-reading, and reading skills. Cultural areas studied in each class include geography, history, science, zoology, botany, art, and music.

A 3-year age span in each classroom. This allows for the younger children to learn from the older children and the older children to become more responsible and confident as they recognize their roles as leaders and mentors. The multi-age grouping also provides students with opportunities for broad social and academic development. Working both independently and with others, students learn strategies for consulting and collaborating with others, conflict resolution skills and respect for individual differences.

In the calm, ordered space of the Montessori prepared environment, children work on activities of their own choice at their own pace. They experience a blend of freedom and self-discipline in a place especially designed to meet their developmental needs.
